Australia-Landkey History Talk

3:00 pm

An Australian man whose forebears lived in Landkey is planning to visit our village soon to pass on his knowledge of history local to this area of North Devon.

Edward Buckingham, who now lives in Melbourne, is keen to share some extracts from notes made by his grandfather in the early 1900s. Grandfather Buckingham grew up at Plymms Farm / Landkey Manor before leaving to serve in World War 1.

The name Buckingham may well be familiar to local residents and not just because of Buckingham's Hill at the west of the village. A story is told of how a member of the Buckingham family was due to get married in 1891 but was prevented from doing so on the planned day due to "The Great Frost". Images of this event may be seen on this website.

Landkey residents should find Edward's notes an interesting portrayal of life in this village over a century ago and are welcome to come along to the Castle to meet him and listen to his talk.

Venue: The Castle Inn, Landkey

Landkey Horticultural Show

2:00 pm

All are welcome to join us at our annual village show which will be opened at 2 pm by Emma Marsh from RHS Rosemoor.

One of the first events will be a Fancy Dress Competition. This year there will be a return of the very popular Dog Agility Show, the North Devon Pipe and Drum Band and the Morris Dancers.

For the children there will be a new attraction – “Sciencedipity” – where scientist Ruth MacLaren will demonstrate the fun side of science. Children can take part and make something to take home.

Other attractions include various stalls, a bouncy castle, tombola, Janette’s Drinks Stall, and Shelley’s Food Van selling ice creams, candy floss, burgers and hot dogs. Delicious cream teas will be served in the school hall – the “proper” way of course with the cream on first! There will also be a display of floral art, fruit, vegetables, cookery and crafts, many of which will be auctioned off later at very reasonable prices. Anyone can enter and there are so many different classes we hope there is something for everyone to have a go at.

Please come along and support us!
