The News is that the Green is celebrating its 21st birthday. It was a Millennium project; the mazzard trees were planted in December 1999, and the rest of the Green was opened officially in Summer 2000. So there can be a debate about the precise birthday date. We are hoping we can have a celebration in 2021 at which the planters of the mazzard trees (some of whom were children at the School) can come and see the outcome of their efforts twenty-one years on.
Photographic competition
As part of the Green’s birthday celebrations we propose to offer a prize for photographs of the Green and the village. Details will be announced shortly, but don’t delay; start photographing now.
At this difficult time there is a reason to smile because there have been three lots of generosity which have benefited the Green. Thanks to Kate Thatcher and her friends who have made face masks, and thanks to those who provided materials. Thanks to Janette and John for selling them in the Shop. And thanks to everybody who has purchased and made donations; before the end of July these exceeded £1,000. This wonderful generosity makes up for the cancellation of fund-raising events, and the Green’s trustees intend to find some way of making sure this generosity is not overlooked.
There have been many outbreaks of this fungal disease across North Devon, and the Green has not escaped. It is a serious disease, and eventually trees die; young trees seem to be the worst effected initially. Remedial action will take place during the autumn and winter 2020/2021.
The original plans for the Green embraced a wildflower meadow, (in the lower part near the stream), but its’ establishment proved more challenging than envisaged at the time. The idea is to be investigated again, and if you would like to support the idea please get in touch.
